Omega Ear Clip Assembly - Work Hardening Procedure
The wire component of the Omega ear clip must be work-hardened before being fitted into the upright ear posts (Y-frames).
During manufacture, the wire is intentionally annealed to allow it to be formed into the correct shape. At this stage, however, the wire is too soft & lacks the resilience required to produce the correct spring action.
Once the upright ear post (Y-frame) has been soldered into position, the wire must be work-hardened as follows:
- Place the formed wire on a clean, hard, flat surface.
- Cover the wire with a soft cloth or other protective material to prevent surface marking.
- Using a rawhide, nylon, or other non-marking mallet, gently tap along the length of the wire. Apply light, even blows until the wire develops the required spring tension. Avoid excessive hammering, as this may distort the shape or make the wire excessively stiff.
- Test the flexibility periodically during the process to achieve the desired spring action.
Once the correct resilience has been achieved, simply insert the work-hardened wire into the soldered upright ear posts (Y-frames). The Omega ear clip should now provide the correct spring tension for secure & comfortable operation
