Shellac is a natural resin used by Jewellers as a temporary, meltable adhesive for holding odd-shaped or delicate pieces firmly during stone setting & engraving.
Once heated, it becomes putty-like, hardens as it cools for a secure grip, & dissolves effortlessly in denatured alcohol or acetone when done.
Why Jewelers Use It
- Secure Holding: Provides a rigid, non-slip base for engraving, filing, and stone-setting.
- Shape Conforming: Molds easily to complex, irregular shapes that are otherwise impossible to clamp in a vice.
- Reusability: Easily softens under a gentle torch or heat gun, allowing you to reposition the jewelry piece or remove it without damage.
Application: Heat your holding tool, melt the shellac onto it, and press your heated metal piece into the cooling shellac. Let it harden completely before you begin working.
Cleanup: When the job is finished, gently reheat the metal with your torch to detach the piece. Soak the jewelry in denatured alcohol or acetone to dissolve any leftover shellac residue.
